The rivalry between Du Plessis and Adesanya expanded further at UFC 290 in July 2023. Then middleweight champion Adesanya faced off with du Plessis after a dominant stoppage of DDP’s Robert Whittaker. They have since swapped roles in the middleweight division.

The pair were expected to fight two months later; But du Plessis’ inability to make quick changes allowed Strickland to upset Adesanya for the title. Adesanya bounced back for the first time since that shock loss in hopes of becoming a three-time UFC champion.

Oceania was well represented at UFC 305. In the co-main event, New Zealand’s Kai Cara-France takes on Australia’s Steve Erceg. Other fighters from that part of the world include Dan Hooker; So Tuivasa and Josh Coulibaw.

A high-profile trans-Tasman clash pits bantamweight stars Steve Erceg (12-2) and Kai Cara-France (24-11) in the former’s hometown.

Fresh off his narrow loss to defending champion Alexandre Pantoza, Erceg will be charting his way back to the winner’s circle and another title shot.

Strong Cara-France remain a threat to anyone in the division and will set their sights on another crack at the championship.
